Our Director

Stacey St. JohnStacey St. John

Stacey's exposure to this wonderful art form began when she was a young girl, listening to her dad, grandpa, and uncle sing in their local barbershop chorus. Her love of 4-part harmony continued to blossom throughout her childhood, and at the age of 18, Stacey joined the Gem City Chorus in Dayton, Ohio.  Stacey earned several Top 5 International chorus medals before retiring from Gem City to raise her young family.

Speaking of her family...Stacey met her husband, Chad, at a barbershop convention in 1992 when she was just 17 years old.  Chad also grew up in the barbershop world and started singing with The Southern Gateway Chorus when he was just 9.  Chad’s mom, the late Judy St. John, was the bass of the 1974 International Quartet Champions, The Sounds of Music, was a certified judge in 2 categories, served on the International Board of Directors, and was a beloved coach and mentor to women around the world.  Stacey feels so very blessed to have had the opportunity to learn from one of the greatest women Sweet Adelines has ever known.  Stacey and Chad were married in 1994 and together they have two fantastic boys, Hayden and Brendan.

While raising her two boys, Stacey was no stranger to the contest stage.  She sang tenor with the 2-time Top 10 Finalists, Success Express.  Then, in 2005 she and three other women formed Moxie Ladies. This young, vibrant quartet was dedicated to making great music together, and they were crowned as the 2009 International Quartet Champions.  Stacey enjoyed traveling the country performing on shows and teaching music schools, and she continues to be an active coach for both quartets and choruses.

Stacey debuted as a director in 2013 with Voice of America Chorus, and under her direction, this small chorus was named the 2013, 2014, and 2015 Region 4 Division A Chorus Champions.  Stacey is thrilled to be starting this new chapter as Capital City’s director.  Her passion for creativity and unrelenting focus on musical excellence are at the foundation of everything she does.  Whether you’re a seasoned Sweet Adeline or just hearing barbershop for the first time, you’ll quickly recognize that Stacey loves making great music AND loves having fun!

We invite you to an upcoming rehearsal to meet our new director!  We meet every Thursday at 7pm at All Souls Unitarian Church, 5805 E. 56th Street, Indianapolis, IN  46226.
